Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

*meant for 12th grade

About this Unit

Pride and Prejudice is one of Jane Austen's most popular books. This may be because her universal themes of societal and parental pressure, class structure, and first impressions can be understood by anyone.

This unit will take a unique twist. Instead of just reading the novel, this unit explores how universal and timeless these characters, their stories and the book's themes actually are. The book is paired with the Youtube series The Lizzie Bennet Diaries produced by acclaimed vlogger Hank Green.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a 100 episode series (about 3-5 minutes each episode) that stars Lizzie, Jane and Lydia Bennet as well as Charlotte Lu, Ricky Collins, Darcy, Bing Lee, Caroline, and George Wickham. It takes place in modern day central California in a college town outside of San Franciso. Lizzie is a 24 year old grad student living with her parents and creating a vlog about her life as part of her thesis. The show closely follows the plot of Pride and Prejudice but in an updated way.

This unit will focus on the themes and character development as well as discuss interpretations and adaptations of classic works. It is best to be taught at the end of a semester or year as the unit assessment is very large.
